Development of the e-toll system is on schedule
Last December NTPS Plc. launched its development programme to allow toll payment for heavy duty vehicles with a maximum gross weight of over 3.5 tonnes in the HU-GO system. The purpose of this programme is to identify incorrect registration of emission classes, allow for setting the correct emission category, and modernize toll collection.
Accordingly, as of 3 February 2019, when customers register goods motor vehicles with foreign registration numbers or modify their data in the electronic system, the vehicle make, year of manufacture, VIN number and emission class must be entered, and the document stating the vehicle’s environmental category must be uploaded to the hu-go.hu website.
According to the statistics of the National Toll Payment Services Plc., carriers have complied with this new requirement in 82,000 cases. The number of vehicles with foreign country codes was close to 72,000, while data of Hungarian vehicles were uploaded in 10,000 cases. This latter number indicates those who were not obliged to upload such data, yet they voluntarily helped NTPS Plc. by providing the information requested. NTPS Plc. can actually retrieve the above data for goods motor vehicles registered in Hungary from the Hungarian public vehicle registers.
Recently, NTPS Plc. recorded 76,000 goods motor vehicles equipped with on-board units per month on average, which figure suggests that the majority of foreigners using the Hungarian toll road network did comply with their data upload obligation. 90 percent of the 82,000 vehicles were registered in the system with EURO6 and EURO5 engines, the two categories with the lowest emission levels.
The changes do not affect vehicles using the vignette system. As a result of the most recent developments of the e-toll system scheduled for completion in the second half of 2019 the earliest, carriers of vehicles with a gross weight of over 3.5 tonnes will no longer be charged with multiple toll fines if the vehicle is registered for a wrong emission class.
