Please pay attention to the below points

According to the experiences gained since the amendment of the decree on motorway charges, we can say that the majority of drivers have purchased their e-vignettes under the new regulation with due care. However, there are some who made their purchases according to the previous rules, thus, even if involuntarily, they acted incorrectly. The NTPS aims at promoting the lawful behavior, therefore, they would like to raise the attention to typical mistakes made by users by way of their information activity.

The majority of the previous charge-free sections of the road network became subject to toll payment.

According to the Decree effective from February 1 2015,  only  the following road sections can be used charge-free:

  • Motorway M31,
  • Expressway M86,
  • Motorway M8,
  • Expressway M9 on its section between Main Road 6 and Main Road 51,
  • Expressway M9 on the Kaposvár loop section (sign of Main Road 61),
  • Expressway M4 (sign of Main Road 4) on the section between Vecsés and the road leading to Budapest Liszt Ferenc International Airport (between km sections 19+550 and 20+518),
  • The following sections of Expressway M0:
    • the section between Main Road 1 and Motorway M5;
    • the section between Expressway M4 (Main Road 4) and Motorway M3;
    • Megyeri Bridge (the section between Main Road 11 and Main Road 2).

The scope of validity of the regional vignette extends outside the relevant county, up to the first junction past the county border. You can find the territorial validity of the regional vignettes according to junction numbers and road section numbers in the annex of the decree available at www.toll-charge.hu. On the county maps, the sections of the neighboring counties, which can still be used are marked with red, and the large blue circle signifies the junction, where the toll road can be exited without further toll payment obligation. It is worth getting informed at www.toll-charge.hu, where you can find both the country map as well as the county maps.

Mistaking category D1 for category D2

According to our experiences, one of the most common mistakes is that an authorization for D1 category is purchased for vehicles belonging in category D2 since January. In accordance with the decree it is as if the driver had not purchased an authorization at all. Vehicle categories can be determined on the basis of the official entries in the registration certificate (sections J and S.1.). For further information, please check the relevant table at www.toll-charge.hu. In case of determining the wrong category, drivers can pay or reclaim the charge amount difference in person in the Customer Service offices of the NTPS. The registration number registered for the newly issued authorization for the appropriate vehicle category shall be identical with the original registration number, as certified by the registration certificate of the vehicle. Correcting the vehicle category after imposing the excess charge shall not exempt the obligor from payment of the excess charge imposed previously.

Information related to category U

Category B2 (buses) remained unchanged, but the road use for trailers on toll sections shall be paid separately in categories D2 and B2. That is, if a bus tows a trailer, then an authorization shall be purchased for both category B2 and category U. In category U, the charge in all cases shall be paid for the registration number of the trailer.

Additional important information

Weekly (10-day) e-vignettes for motorcycles are available for HUF 1470, and monthly or annual national and annual regional vignettes can be purchased at the prices of category D1.

The purchase of e-vignettes subsequent to the entry to a toll section is still a common mistake. In accordance with the decree, e-vignettes shall in all cases be purchased prior to the entry to the toll road section, and the purchase of the e-vignette even only a few minutes later shall be considered as unauthorized road use. Cameras can immediately determine (by the registration number) whether passing cars have valid e-vignettes.

The well-known time-based vignettes with validity all over the country – for periods of a week (10 days), a month, and a year – are still in place, thus no further regional vignettes need to be purchased taking validity into account. Road users shall have a valid road use authorization, which can either be the time-based or the new, region-based regional vignettes.
